Hi i am very freaked out as my tanks been set up for the last 4 months and i have been using a coralife dip in hydrometer which my salt has read at always 1.23- 1.24 but i got a new eye hydrometer which i set up today and its said my salt is 1.030!! i then checked it with my old one and it read 1.025 so that must have read wrong the whole time for me so now im panicking as my salt is soooo. I have 3 salinity tests and I performed each and got these results: 1.026 1.030 1.032 So obviously something is wrong, I guess I should invest in a higher quality salinity test. I am going to go with close the center number and I am going to assume the salinity is 1.029-1.030, which is a risk, I know General rule of thumb is Do not raise SG by more than 0.001 per 24 hours or decrease by more than .002 per 24 hours. For a FO tank, 1.023 is OK. For a reef tank, I would go no lower than 1.025. There are people on the forum that keep their tanks around the 1.028 mark

1,127. Reaction score. 1,782. The question isnt should I keep my tank at 35 ppt because I have corals. Since 35 ppt is the salinity of the ocean, that answer is pretty clear. (There are small regions where its different, but nearly the whole ocean stays at 35 ppt without any variation. Including nearly all reefs Imagine my shock when after calibrating it, it showed the salinity of my tank to be at 1.030. I then took a water sample to my local store that they confirmed that the salinity had indeed risen to that level which was deleterious to my corals Well. I'm at 1.030 at 60% full. I am petty sure if I transfer the rock with this salinity then add RODI to lower then salinity to 1.025, the bacteria probably will not died off in the 30mins or so in 1.030 salinity. Right? I Increasing the water in the tank now will make life a little harder aqua scaping. I hate to redo the cycle

Recommended salinity levels for a reef tank are 1.024 - 1.025 (32 - 33 ppt) and if you are slightly below or above that level (1.022 - 1.027), your tank will be just fine. Of course if your levels are out of the 1.024 - 1.025 range, I do recommend you bring them back in check If the salinity gradually got up to 1.030, and the inhabitants of the tank are acclimated to it, then they should be fine. New additions however would suffer badly. that said, I would slowly bring it down .001 per day until its around 1.026-1.027 Salinity at 1.030. Is this OK while cycling? Reef Discussio

The Red Sea is much saltier than any other running 1.027-1.030, so a tank for those fish should be run at a higher salinity than one for Indo-Pacific which runs 1.021-1.025 or so. The Carribean and Florida are saltier than the Indo-Pacific, if you keep a tank for those animals Many types of hardy coral will survive in waters with specific gravity (SG) as low as 1.020, while others will turn bleached or brown very quickly if the salinity level falls below 1.024. If this is your first time keeping a reef tank it is highly advised to get corals that are tolerant of a wide range of pH and salinity levels Most of these tanks that were losing corals for this reason had salinity in excess of 1.030 or higher. Needless to say this salinity is usually not conducive to the long term health of most corals. As a result, I now use two refractometers, which I calibrate regularly using Julian's AccuraSea reference solution

Salinity, in plain terms, is the concentration of salt in aquarium water. More specifically, salinity is a measure of the dissolved sodium ions in the water and it can be measured in parts per thousand (ppt). Most saltwater aquarists measure the salinity in their aquarium using a hydrometer which measures the specific gravity in the tank If the organisms in the aquarium are from brackish environments with lower salinity, or from the Red Sea with higher salinity, selecting something other than S=35 may make good sense.
